WIAA/Seattle Times state athletes of the week
State Athletes of the Week for Nov. 13-19, chosen from nominations by athletic directors.
Class 4A
Max Browne, Skyline football: Browne, a junior, completed 15 of 24 passes for 334 yards and four touchdowns in a 52-17 quarterfinal victory over Central Valley. He also ran four times for 31 yards and a TD.
Lianna Simms, Skyline soccer: Simms, a junior, scored the only goal on a free kick as the top-ranked Spartans beat Bellarmine Prep for their third state championship in four years.
Class 3A
Tyler Hasty, Bellevue football: The Wolverines' senior rushed for four touchdowns and 113 yards in a 35-14 quarterfinal win over No. 2 Lakes.
Kalynn Huebner, Seattle Prep soccer: Huebner, a senior, scored the winning goal on a header in the 35th minute of the Panthers' 3-2 victory over Liberty for the state title.
Class 2A
Mitch Gueller, W.F. West football: Gueller, a senior, carried 21 times for 264 yards and three touchdowns as the Chehalis school beat Lakewood 33-18 to advance to the state semifinals for the first time.
Emma Bergstrom, Interlake soccer: The Saints' sophomore scored goals to beat Archbishop Murphy in the semifinals (1-0) and Cedarcrest in the state-championship match (1-0). Her goal in the final came on a volleyed corner kick.
Class 1A
Alex Milton, Cascade Christian football: Milton, a senior, rushed for 90 yards and two touchdowns and made four tackles in a 48-15 quarterfinal victory over Toledo.
Lindsey Vandergrift, Seattle Academy soccer: Vandergrift, a senior, assisted on the winning goal in the second overtime as Seattle Academy beat Cashmere 2-1 for the state title. She also had a goal in a 2-0 semifinal victory over University Prep.
Class 2B
Alex Sampson, White Swan football: Sampson, a junior, had 132 yards and three TDs on 13 carries in a 42-37 quarterfinal loss to Colfax.
Kristina Englestone, Bear Creek soccer: The Grizzlies' sophomore goalkeeper made a save and converted a penalty kick to help seal a 1-0 shootout victory over Napavine for the state championship.
Class 1B
Tory Knebel, Pomeroy football: Knebel, a senior, carried seven times for 172 yards and scored five touchdowns in a 68-24 quarterfinal win over Wellpinit. He also returned a blocked punt for a touchdown.
