Prep football: Games of interest for Week 3

Jim Beseda and Jerry Ulmer, The Oregonian, September 15, 2011 2 p.m.

Games to keep an eye on this week:

Barlow (1-1) at Clackamas (1-1), 7 p.m.: Both teams look to build on momentum after decisive wins last week. Clackamas ended a 12-game losing streak with a 50-6 win over McKay. Cade Wilkins, one of 10 sophomores starting at least part-time, completed 17 of 20 passes in his first start and senior Oliver Farnes ran for 190 yards and four scores. Barlow gained 552 yards to beat North Salem 40-20 as senior Campbell Summerfield threw for three scores, two to senior Cameron Pernich. In last year’s game, host Barlow rallied from a 21-12 deficit in the fourth quarter to win 26-21.

Skyline, Wash. (1-1) at Lake Oswego (2-0), 7 p.m.: The Lakers, who lost at Skyline of Sammamish 38-14 last year, get a chance to redeem themselves on their home turf. But the Spartans -- Washington’s big-school champion in 2008 and 2009 and the runner-up last year -- enter ranked No. 1 in Class 4A. Skyline is coming off a 31-17 loss to Bellevue, ranked No. 1 in Class 3A. Spartans junior Max Browne, who threw for three scores against the Lakers last year, had 300 passing yards in last week’s loss. Lake Oswego beat Westview 35-3 last week as senior Alex Matthews and senior Stevie Coury connected on three touchdown passes.

West Linn (2-0) at West Salem (1-1), 7 p.m.: Two teams powered by excellent line play meet in a nonleague game. West Linn has junior Evan Voeller (6-5, 280) and senior Cam Keizur (6-4, 310) and West Salem has seniors Lochlin Deeks (6-3, 260) and Carl Kreitzberg (6-3, 265). The Lions beat Centennial 55-14 last week as four players threw touchdown passes and the defense forced five turnovers. West Salem lost to Sheldon 51-0 in its opener, the first time the Titans went scoreless in six years, but gained 438 yards to beat South Eugene 57-12 last week. West Salem beat West Linn 41-20 in the 2009 quarterfinals and 38-26 in a nonleague game at West Linn last year.

Tigard (2-0) vs. Century (2-0), 7 p.m. at Hillsboro Stadium: The Jaguars from Hillsboro hope to put up a better fight than they did a year ago when they made the jump from Class 5A to Class 6A and Tigard rolled to a 41-18 Pacific Conference home win. "We went into the game scared and we played scared," Century coach Bill Smith said. "It wasn't until later in the game that we figured out, 'We can play better than we're playing.' It's so much a mindset with high school kids. If we play to the best of our ability, we should be competitive with them, but it's all up to the kids."

Mountain View (2-0) at Sherwood (2-0), 7 p.m.: If the fireworks that erupted between these two teams faced off at Linfield College's summer camp were any indication of what to expect in this rematch of last season's Class 5A semifinal, this game might be the best Week 3 match-up across all classifications. In two games, Sherwood quarterback Dusty Crabtree has completed 11 of 22 passes for 261 yards and two touchdowns, while the Bowmen running game has amassed 576 yards and nine TDs.

Sandy (1-1) at Wilsonville (2-0), 7 p.m.: The Pioneers, coming off last week’s 21-12 to St. Helens, are hoping to slow down Wilsonville’s high-scoring offense, which has put up a combined 111 points in wins over The Dalles-Wahtonka and Milwaukie. Sandy’s best defense might be its multiple-set offense, under the direction of junior quarterback Justin Adams. “We have to be able to get people to spread out,” Sandy coach Ray Baker said. “It will be an interesting game against Wilsonville, because they’re a very aggressive defense that brings a lot of heat.”

St. Paul (1-1) at Lummi, Wash. (2-0), 7 p.m.: Senior running back Matt Gooding and junior quarterback Danny Drescher lead the two-time defending Class 1A champion Buckaroos, who are looking to bounce back from last week’s 50-48 loss in overtime to Lowell that snapped their 30-game winning streak.
